Lapiplasty Bunion Surgery

What is a Lapiplasty bunion procedure?

In traditional bunion treatment approaches, a bunion, also know as a hallux valgus deformity, is often perceived as just a cosmetic condition. Because of this, bunion treatment often involves shaving the bump and shifting the affected bone.

But a bunion is not simply a cosmetic issue. Rather, what causes bunions is a multidimensional deformity caused by an unstable toe joint in the foot. The unstable toe joint causes the relating bone, known as the metatarsal bone, to misalign and protrude, forming a bunion. Your metatarsal bone can become misaligned in three ways: the bone can start to shift sideways, the bone can rise up, or the bone can rotate.

Lapiplasty is a 3D surgery procedure for the permanent correction of bunions that addresses all three metatarsal bone misalignments and repairs your unstable toe joint.

Why is the Lapiplasty bunion procedure done?

The Lapiplasty procedure is performed to help permanently correct your unstable toe joint and correct all three misalignments of your metatarsal bone in order to address the bunion malformation.

If you are experiencing bunion pain and are wondering how to get rid of bunions or how to relieve your bunion pain, the Lapiplasty bunion procedure is likely right for you. Speak with one of our surgeons to find out more about the Lapiplasty procedure or other types of bunion surgeries. Sometimes other procedures are required to fix hammertoes or other foot deformities.

What does the Lapiplasty bunion procedure involve?

The Lapiplasty surgery involves your doctor using advanced medical tools and very precise techniques to naturally remove the bunion by shifting the misaligned metatarsal bone back to its original position, correcting all three dimensions of misalignment. To stabilize your unstable toe joint, your surgeon will equip the joint with utilized patented, metal plates to permanently secure the unstable joint. This allows you to put weight on your foot within one week after surgery.

Recovery time after the Lapiplasty bunion surgery will vary, but in general, you should be able to place weight on your feet within a few days. It will take around six to eight weeks of recovery time until you can start wearing comfortable footwear. Returning to regular activities and wearing normal footwear will require around four to six months of recovery time. Speak with your doctor to learn more about recovery after the Lapiplasty surgery.
