Lapiplasty Q & A

What is the Lapiplasty procedure?

While traditional bunion surgery involves shaving away the excess bony tissue on your big toe joint, the Lapiplasty procedure addresses the underlying problem — the multidimensional deformity caused by instability in your big toe joint.

Bunions are complex three-dimensional foot deformities that cause pain and increased instability in your foot as they progress. They form when weakness in the joint pushes your joint up, sideways, or causes the joint to rotate. Lapiplasty is a 3D surgery that corrects all three potential alignment issues in your joint.

Why would I need a Lapiplasty?

The podiatrists at Kaplansky Foot and Ankle Centers perform Lapiplasty surgeries to correct severe bunions that cause immobilizing pain and negatively impact your quality of life, and were featured on WBNS-10TV for offering this advanced, innovative procedure. If you have a painful bunion, make an appointment to talk to one of the podiatrists at Kaplansky Foot and Ankle Centers about your symptoms and find out if a Lapiplasty procedure is the best treatment option to relieve your symptoms and repair your bunion.

What happens during a Lapiplasty surgery?

During a Lapiplasty procedure, your podiatrist thoroughly numbs your foot and provides a sedative to keep you relaxed and comfortable throughout the surgery. Then using special surgical tools, they move your metatarsal bones back into alignment. Unlike other bunion surgery techniques, Lapiplasty corrects all three misalignments and the unstable joint that causes bunions.

After correcting the alignment of your metatarsals, your doctor attaches titanium plates to the small metatarsal bones in your feet to secure them into their corrected positions. In addition to treating your bunion, Lapiplasty also reduces your risk of the bunion redeveloping, which occurs in 70% of other bunion surgeries.

You’ll need to rest for a few days after your Lapiplasty procedure. However, you should be able to stand and walk within a few days. In most cases, you can start to wear comfortable shoes within eight weeks and get back to your regular footwear and activities within four to six months.

What are the benefits of Lapiplasty?

The primary benefit of the Lapiplasty procedure is that it corrects the instability and misalignment that causes bunions to form, preventing the condition from recurring. The surgery restores your foot anatomy and relieves your pain. Recovery is faster and less restrictive than other bunion surgeries, so you can get back to your regular activities and lead a pain-free, active life.

If you have a painful bunion, call Kaplansky Foot and Ankle Centers or schedule an appointment online today to find out how a Lapiplasty procedure can help.
